A wise futuristic decision made by the Weyburn Public School resulted in the September 1920 opening of Haig School. Permission from Earl Douglas Haig, Commander in Chief of the British Forces in France and Belgium during World War I, allowed the school to be named after him. Situated on a flat seven acre piece of prairie land, the six classroom structure would be a new and exciting environment for 180 pupils distributed between primary and grade seven. A centralized auditorium and various basement rooms would help entice the Department of Education to lease space in which to conduct Third Class Normal Courses. This program resulted in desperately needed teachers being turned out after a sixteen week training session.
1959 saw a four classroom school addition to the north-westerner of the existing building at approximately the same cost as that of the original building. In 1966 Haig changed to a grade 1 through 6 school with the opening of the Weyburn Junior High School. A significant renovation expansion took place in 1981 when a new classroom, gymnasium, staffroom, office and vice principal's office were created. The original auditorium became our friendly spacious resource library center.
Major renovations throughout various sections were completed at an approximate cost of $800,000. Thirteen full time classrooms, music, remedial support, science supplies, computer lab, custodian, staff room, and administrative offices allow our teachers, pupils, secretary and teacher aides to enjoy a warm, friendly and spacious facility; one which former pupil, W.O. Mitchell, would be thrilled to visit, just as we hope you will.
