MENTOR PROGRAMPangman School
2011-2012
The purpose of the Mentor Program is to contribute to the healthy development of children who have been identified as needing a quality one-on-one relationship with a high school volunteer to help the child to reach their full potential.
The foremost objective is to motivate children physically, intellectually and socially in the school setting. We want to increase self esteem, self-awareness and self-confidence. We provide a volunteer an opportunity to make a difference in an individual child’s life.
Mentors and Mentees meet once a week for the duration of the school year. Activities will be suggested to develop the relationship between the Mentors and the Mentees. Examples include: reading, drawing, games, sporting activities, talking, arts and crafts, and so on.
The advantages of this program are plentiful. Children are provided with one-on-one attention from a high school student who is seen as non-authoritative. Motivation and social skills are strengthened for the child. Children have an advocate to encourage learning and a positive attitude towards school. The program, also, provides an opportunity for the Mentors to gain experience that can be used in resumes and post secondary applications.
